The same is true of a dry rub for ribs in the oven. You aren’t going to get any smoke in the oven so a rub that has an enhanced smokey flavor may make all the difference in the world. A sweet rib rub applied as a dry rub for pulled pork may be a bit much as the ratio of rub to meat is a lot different between the two.
